The Diocese of Gallup asked for prayers for those affected by an attack at a parade that left at least 15 people injured.
“Please keep the people of Gallup and all those who were in attendance in your prayers,” the diocese posted on Facebook.
Earlier this month, hundreds of people were gathered to celebrate the Intertribal Ceremonial Parade in Gallup, when a 33-year-old man drove an SUV through the parade route, according to the New Mexico State Police.
The suspect was identified as Jeff Kenn Irving, of Gallup, and he is facing 21 charges. The charges include aggravated DWI, leaving the scene of a crash and driving with a revoked license. Irving's blood alcohol level was 0.24, which is three times the state's legal limit. His attack left at least 15 people injured, including two police officers, according to KRQE News.
A few area leaders, including Gallup Mayor Louis Bonaguidi and President of the Navajo Nation Jonathan Nez, were at the parade.
"It was very traumatic last night. I was in front of the El Morro Theatre when Mr. Nez and his entourage were coming through; then we heard these voices screaming at us to get out of the way,” Bonaguidi said.
"We were in the path of the vehicle,” Nez said. “Thank God, the folks that were around me, our team members or council delegates were not struck by the vehicle.”
The Diocese of Gallup covers portions of Arizona and New Mexico, serving primarily Hispanic and Native American communities.
