Bishop John Dolan, who was recently installed as the new bishop of Phoenix, led bishops and clergy in evening prayer during a private service conducted by the diocese.
“We witnessed the formal Reception of a Bishop at his Cathedral Church,” the Diocese of Phoenix posted on Facebook.
The installation Mass was celebrated on Aug. 2 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Avondale. Dolan replaces Bishop Thomas Olmsted, who is retiring.
“My first impression of Bishop Dolan is that he's a person you can talk to and very approachable,” Dr. Maria Romo Chavira, chancellor of the Diocese of Phoenix, said in a 12news.com report. "He’s funny and a person who has some funny jokes. I think people are going to really enjoy getting to know him.”
Bishop Dolan had previously served as the auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of San Diego since 2017.
“One of his focal points is to really listen to people of the diocese,” Chavira said in the news report. That will be a huge undertaking as the Diocese of Phoenix boasts of 1.1 million Catholics and 94 parishes.
Pope Francis appointed Dolan as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix in June. Dolan has previously said in an earlier Facebook post that he is grateful for the appointment and looks forward to meeting the people of Phoenix.
