The Diocese of Tucson celebrated the golden anniversary of Monsignor Jeremiah McCarthy's ordination to priesthood.

McCarthy, a priest of the Diocese of Tucson, earned his doctorate from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, before serving at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, California, for 20 years in various capacities, John Carroll University said on its site. Among his titles were academic dean, rector and professor of moral theology.

"Congratulations to Monsignor Jeremiah McCarthy who is celebrating his 50th anniversary of priesthood," the diocese said on Facebook.

For the next seven years, he served the Association of Theological Schools in Pittsburgh as director of accreditation and institutional evaluation, John Carroll University said. He then returned to California to teach at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park for a year before going to Arlington, Virginia, to serve as executive director of the National Catholic Educational Association's seminary department in 2010.

McCarthy was one of several Diocese of Tucson officials who had the honor of hosting Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kiev-Halych, Ukraine, at a special liturgy at a small Tucson parish in 2017, Catholic Philly reported. Shevchuk had traveled to the U.S. for the installation of Ukrainian Catholic Bishop Benedict Aleksiychuk as the new head of Chicago's Eparchy of St. Nicholas.

From 2019-20, McCarthy served as vice president of the board of directors of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Tucson, the parish said on its site.
