The Diocese of Phoenix observed the Feast Day of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Nov. 17 with a prayer to the saint along with one of her most famous quotes.

“Today we celebrate St. Elizabeth of Hungary,” the diocese posted on Facebook. “Pray for us!”

The post includes a quote the diocese attributed to the saint who was born a princess: "How could I bear a crown of gold when my Lord bears a crown of thorns? And he bears it for me!"

Elizabeth, the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Merania, was born July 7, 1207. At 14, she was married to Louis of Thuringia and had three children with him. As a royal, Elizabeth could have led a privileged life; instead, she chose a life of prayer, penance and service to the sick and the poor, and used her position as princess and wife of a ruler to advance her charity work, according to a biography on Catholic Online.

When Elizabeth's husband died in the Crusades, his family threw her out of the palace for "squandering the royal purse" with her charity work, according to Franciscan Media. However, because she was the mother of the legal heir to the throne of Thuringia, she was reinstated by her husband's allies.

Elizabeth joined the Secular Franciscan Order in 1228, dedicating the rest of her tragically short life to caring for the sick in the hospital she founded in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. She died at the age of 23 and was so popular that she was canonized just four years later, in 1235, by Pope Gregory IX. Her feast day is celebrated on Nov. 17. St. Elizabeth of Hungary is the patron saint of bakers, beggars, charities, and the death of children.
