Following the withdrawal of the U.S. from Afghanistan, the number of Afghan refugees coming to America has increased dramatically; to aid in the resettlement efforts of those seeking a safe future, Catholic Community Services is helping them adjust to life here by helping them meet basic needs.
Catholic Community Services, an affiliate of the Diocese of Tucson, is providing invaluable aid to those in need.
"Families have been through a tremendous amount of trauma already, and they need to get settled here and become members of our community," Steve Kozachik, Tucson City Councilman, said according to Tucson.com.
Catholic Community Services is collaborating with Arizona’s resettlement program and the federal Afghan Placement and Assistance Program in order to provide household and personal items that the refugees will need.
The State Department claims that Phoenix is one of the best cities for refugees looking to resettle. Over 120,000 Afghan individuals were evacuated after the U.S. withdrew. Many of them were connected to the U.S. military involvement in the country, including families of individuals who helped America and feared that the Taliban would retaliate against them, according to 12 News.
Aaron Rippenkroeger, executive director of the Arizona chapter of the International Rescue Committee, said that the state is anticipating hundred more Afghan refugees over the coming months, according to AP News.
