Catholic Education Arizona (CEA) is proud of its alumni, including Sara Tellez, who graduated from Phoenix’s St. Mary’s High School in 2010.

During her years in high school, Tellez played volleyball and was active in the drama department. She also played a big role in the athletic training department, had a place on the Student Council and was a dedicated student.

“I strive to maintain a well-rounded lifestyle and enjoy reading, jewelry making, traveling, volunteering and watching various genres of movies,” Tellez said in an article published on the CEA website.

Now a teacher herself, Tellez has used her love of learning to instill the same passion in her students. She works at Ss. Simon and Jude teaching 7th- and 8th grade English, and she still uses her love of theater by serving in the role of tech director for the school’s productions.

Tellez said that the years she spent in Catholic school were a blessing to her, and it was during those years that she learned much about God and the world.

“I am a product of 17 years of Catholic education in the elementary, high school and university level,” Tellez said. “The Christ-like love of this community set an example that paved the way for my passion for helping others, largely those that cannot advocate for themselves. The Loreto Sisters, especially, instilled in me a need to serve God’s people in any way I could.”

Tellez served as a lector and Eucharistic minister, went on missions and retreat trips and always did what she could to serve Christ and love others.

“Through the guidance of the Holy Cross community, I entered into the world of social work where I was able to answer the call to advocate for God’s most vulnerable children in corners across the globe in Ghana, Italy and Nicaragua,” Tellez said. During her time in those countries, Tellez lived among the poor and was able to see the importance of being the hands and feet of Christ.

Armed with the skills and foundations she needs, Tellez is excited about the future.

“I plan to continue teaching in the secondary English classroom where I can help students find their voice and use it to serve God and others,” Tellez said. “I thoroughly enjoy being in the Catholic schools to the point where I never want to leave.”
