The Catholic Community of Douglas-Pirtleville in Tucson shared a reflection in an Aug. 8 blog entry on the Community website, likening the chaotic times in which Jesus intervened to our current state of events now.

“Water is life-sustaining but also dangerous, especially if you find yourself in this terrifying situation,” the reflection stated. “The torrential storms along with its ferocious winds, raging waters and gigantic waves in the Sea of Galilee can be unforgiving and terribly toss and even capsize a boat.”

In the midst of this storm, Jesus came to the disciples, walking amongst the waves that were raging. Peter, eager to meet his Lord, asked that he could come out on the water with Jesus.

Jesus invited him out and instantly Peter began to doubt the Lord, sinking down in the waves.

“Jesus stretched out his hand, took Peter by the hand and gently straightened him out, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" the reflection continued. "O you of little faith, why did you take your eyes off me? O you of little faith, why did you lose focus and lack attention? O you of little faith, why did you let yourself be carried away by heavy waves and by destructive storms of life? O you of little faith, why did you let the vast ocean of fear, doubts and uncertainty to paralyze you?”

Peter is so similar to us. He is fearful even when the Lord is right by him. As conditions worsen, we panic and doubt the Lord, yet in perfect conditions we all-too-often forget our need of him.

“This entire scenario captures the storms of Covid-19, ravages of the pandemic, of fearful anxiety," the reflection said. "Jesus walks with us in the chaos and the devastation of life. He carries us over in the waters of unbelief. He calms the perfect storm, a powerful and threatening force of nature showing us the presence of God coming to the rescue of a church and society under siege by terrible times.”

Even though we cannot know the future, we do know that Jesus will always come to rescue us.
