In the July 26 weekly bulletin from St. Bridget Roman Catholic Parish in Mesa, Liturgical Ministries Coordinator Steve Raml wrote about a man who stumbled onto a huge treasure in a deserted field.

“Now, this was very common in those days of Jesus,” Raml wrote. “People would hide their riches, bury them deep in the ground. Problem is it’s not his field, so by Jewish law, our guy would not be allowed to keep the treasure.”

So the man is crafty, Raml explained, and he digs another hole someplace else and hides the treasure again.

“Then he sells everything he has and buys that field so he can go back and get that treasure.”

Raml used the story to raise a question for parishioners.

“What is your treasure?” he asked. “If your answer is money, then you haven’t looked deep enough into your own heart. Jesus tells us the Kingdom of God is the treasure, so if God is your heart’s desire, then your heart is in the right place.”
