Bishop Tom Olmstead of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix recently addressed safety protocols for the COVID-19 pandemic, urging parishioners to do their best to comply with the current regulations.

“Little things can make a big difference,” Olmstead said in a video. “When you attend Mass, please wear a face mask in the spirit of care for your fellow parishioners. When moving about in public areas and when physical distancing is impossible, we wish we could rely on the angels to guide us without our cooperation. But holiness does not work that way.”

Instead, every person has a part to play, Olmstead said.

“Face masks, when used in tandem with proper physical distancing and good hygiene, help reduce the spread of this deadly virus,” he said. “Keep in mind what is best for the common good. Let us offer it up as a loving sacrifice to God.”

Although the initial efforts to “flatten the curve” of the pandemic appeared to be working in Arizona, recent data “points to an alarming increase of those who are seriously afflicted,” Olmstead said.

It is understandable that some parishioners may not feel safe attending Mass yet, he said.

“Remember the Sunday obligation to attend Mass is dispensed during this pandemic,” Olmstead said. “Remember, no matter where we are, we are surrounded by the angels. As we head into the heat of the summer, I pray you stay healthy, smart, holy and cool.”

Olmstead also had suggestions for parishioners who will be traveling this summer.

“Invite the angels to accompany you, assisting you to take good care of yourself and to love your neighbor," he said. "Serve the Lord with gladness.”
